LEARNING PATH

Mix Major works with each student to design their personal Learning Path.  Through this Learning Path, students learn how to create music through Mix Major’s Comprehensive Curriculum, focusing on the areas that interest them most.  The curriculum gives the students the foundation for creating music.  The Learning Path gives them the freedom to learn and create what they want, at their own pace.

For example, all students will learn how to create and compose original music, but some may choose to focus more on sampling and beatmaking.  Other students may choose to focus on synthesis and sound design.   Some students may want to learn songwriting and recording.

What if the student wants to learn it all?  That's ok too! Students will continue to develop through their Learning Path as long as they’re enrolled in the Program.

No.  In camps and workshops, Mix Major helps students reach their short term creative music goals. With the Music Production Learning Path program, Mix Major helps students achieve their long-term creative music goals.  Camps and workshops provide both general and specialized instruction within a limited time period.  The Music Production Learning Path program isn’t restricted by time.

Q: What are the levels of mastery throughout the Music Production Learning Path program?

INTRO -> BEGINNER [1-3] -> INTERMEDIATE [1-3] -> PROFICIENT [1-2-3] -> ADVANCED [1-2] -> EXPERT

Q: How long does it take for a student to complete their personal Learning Path?

At Mix Major, student learning isn’t tied to a specific time period.  It’s tied to the student's attendance, engagement, effort, and individual progress.

Q: Is instruction tailored to the age of the student?

Definitely! Mix Major tracks the student individually, giving them the attention and guidance they need, as they need it.  The student's age usually provides a benchmark for the best pace of instruction, but no what the age, all students learn and develop at their own pace.

Q: Can I register for a class outside the class’s age group?

Yes, but on a case-by-case basis with approval from Mix Major.  This is called an Age Group Exception, and they’re typically granted to students in one of the following categories:

  1. Siblings in close by different age groups

  2. Friends who are sharing a ride

  3. Students who can’t attend any other Learning Path class due to scheduling conflicts

Age Group Exceptions are granted on a case-by-case basis, giving preference to students who demonstrate high interest in learning and good behavior.

To request an Age Group Exception, email info@mix-major.com before registering.

Q: At what point do students no longer need to take classes?

Mix Major’s goal is to help students reach their musical goals.  Since all students are different (e.g. age, skill, interests), there’s no concrete answer to this question.  The choice is up to the student.  Mix Major will take the students as far as they’re willing to go.

Q: What are classes like?  What is the ratio of lecture-based to hands-on learning?

The best way to learn is by “doing”.  Think about it like learning how to ride a bike.  You don’t start by watching a lecture on what a bike is, how to balance yourself, and what to do if you fall.  Instead, you get a bike with some training wheels and start riding.  Once you’re comfortable, you remove the training wheels, ride and figure it out.

At Mix Major, students learning by “doing”.  For the most part, classes are 90% hands-on work and 10% lecture or sharing.  As students need guidance, the instructor is always there to keep them on their “bike”, and “on track”.

Q: Do students collaborate on music projects?

In some cases, yes.  Collaboration can be extremely valuable in learning music production because students learn from their partner.  Collaboration, however, is on a voluntary basis, so only students who are willing to work with other students will do so.

Q. How long does the Music Production Learning Path program run throughout the year?

The program runs year-round, starting with the beginning of the school year (September), and running through the end of the school year and following summer (August of the following year).

Q. I'd like to continue taking Music Production Learning Path classes after the Season ends in August.  Will I have to register again? And will I pay a registration fee again?

Yes, students will have to re-register each year before September to continue weekly classes in the Music Production Learning Path program.  If students continue through the end of one Season ends into the next Season, the registration fee will be waived.  If students cancel their registration at any time (for example registering in the Fall, then canceling for Summer, and returning again in the Fall of the following year), they will be charged the normal $25 registration fee.

Q. What does the registration fee cover?

The registration fee covers both administrative expenses and the cost of the use of equipment in class (e.g. computers, keyboards, controllers).

HOW TO REGISTER FOR FREE TRIAL CLASS

WHAT IS

MUSIC PRODUCTION?

Music production is the process of creating music using digital music technology.  It's the same process that goes into creating the songs that we listen to everyday.

It's equal parts art and science; creativity and technology.  Creativity generates musical ideas like melodies, rhythms, and lyrics.  Technology brings these musical ideas to life.  It lets us record, transform, layer, and arrange these ideas to create new compositions.

If creativity is the heart and soul of music production, technology is the mind and body.

It's equal parts art & science: creativity & technology
